Review Sony DCRTRV740 Digital8 Camcorder w/ 2.3" LCD, USB Streaming, Memory Stick, & Mega Pixel Video/ Still / Sony TRV740:

The Digital8 line was conceived as a path to digital for current owners of 8mm or Hi8 camcorders. The DCR-TRV740 succeeds in that regard, playing back both 8mm and Hi8 tapes. The TRV740 can also be used as a digital still camera, recording megapixel stills onto the included 8 MB Memory Stick, or it can record MPEG movies. MPEG movies usually are much smaller than DV footage, and can more readily be e-mailed, or posted on the Web. Sony put in a 15x optical zoom and paired it with Super SteadyShot image stabilization. Image stabilization is a handy technology that helps to eliminate the shakiness associated with high zoom levels. The only way to avoid shakiness completely is to utilize a tripod, table, or other stable surface. The 2. 5-inch LCD is the best way to frame your shots, although you can use the black-and-white EVF to preserve battery life. In addition to the normal slew of ports (IEEE 1394, S-video, Mini AV) that have made their way onto TRV740, there's also a USB port, which, with some included software, offers some interesting functions. [+]
Specifically, it allows you to use the camcorder to capture stills, or "broadcast live video with audio," according to Sony, which seems to indicate you can use the TRV740 as a Webcam. There is also one very important port on the TRV740: a mic input. Not only do most camcorders have poor built-in microphones, but also they are often situated too near the tape mechanism, meaning you get the annoying throbbing sound of the tape pulled through the heads. The DCR-TRV740 comes with a power adapter, InfoLithium battery, 8 MB Memory Stick, remote control, two AA batteries, AV cable, lens cap, shoulder strap, USB cable, and software CD-ROM. The DCR-TRV740 brings you optimal performance with the introduction of Megapixel quality to Digital8 recording. Realize superb image quality with your videos plus enjoy your ready-to-print digital still images with Megapixel quality. Don't be limited to 60 seconds of MPEG movie recording anymore thanks to MPEG Movie EX, which allows you extended recording time limited only by the capacity of your Memory Stick media.

Review Sony DCRTRV320 Digital Camcorder / Sony DCR-TRV320:

The Sony DCR-TRV320 records video in the Digital 8 format, and is capable of recording in the 16:9 widescreen format common to movies. A 25x optical zoom and 18x digital zoom will bring you closer to the action, while Sony's SteadyShot digital image stabilization technology helps prevent shaky recordings. The DCR-TRV320 offers a 16-bit PCM digital stereo with 12-bit dubbing. The DCR-TRV320 also doubles as a digital still camera, recording photos onto a Memory Stick card. With Sony's NightShot infrared system, the DCR-TRV320 can shoot in zero-lux (no light) conditions. Sony's DCR-TRV320 is two cameras in one. It records digital video on affordable Digital 8 cassettes and it captures digital still images on versatile Memory Stick media. Digital 8 Achieves stunning picture quality, with up to 500 lines of horizontal resolution and records high quality 12-bit digital stereo audio. SteadyShot Picture Stabilization Another thing you don't need to worry about is holding the camcorder perfectly still. Sony's SteadyShot system uses sophisticated motion sensors to remove unwanted picture shake. 12-bit/16-bit PCM Digital Stereo Audio Recording offers a choice of either a single 16-bit/48kHz stereo audio track for DAT-quality recording, or two 12-bit/32kHz stereo tracks for CD sound quality. To make sure you get the maximum benefit from each charge, Sony's InfoLithium batteries have no life-shortening "memory effect. " To keep you informed of remaining power, Sony's AccuPower meter spells out remaining battery time in minutes on the camcorder's LCD Monitor or Viewfinder. Super NightShot enables you to shoot subjects up to 3 meters away in total darkness. That's why Sony cut power consumption and extended battery life. Control L (LANC) provides two-way communication between the camcorder and other video devices. Six Mode Program AE provides quick and easy setting for the proper exposure, shutter, and depth of field setting for a variety of environments. There are six modes: Portrait, Beach/Ski, Sports Lesson, Landscape, Spotlight, and Sunset/Moon. Forget about cables, wires and adapters. Sony's Super LaserLink system uses infrared light to make a wireless connection from your camcorder to your television. Just use the transmitter in that is built-in to the camcorder together with the optional receiver. The Super LaserLink System features a transmission range up to 8 meters.

Digital 8 system offers high quality digital images with over 500 lines of horizontal resolution and records 12 bit / 16 bit PCM digital audio. The Digital 8 Handycam is the only kind of Digital Handycam that can play back Video 8 and Hi8 analog video. LINK DV in/Out Terminal (IEEE1394) or an infrared remote control. With the USB terminal, digital images can be transmitted directly from Memory Stick to PC at high speed. In addition, the i. LINK allows easy, speedy digital data transmission between Digital 8 Handycam, VCR and PC. The new model is equipped with an Intelligent Accessory Shoe, which allows users to use the innovative Shoe Attachable Portable Printer (PVP-MSH) to print images right after shooting or memory mixed pictures from memory mode with recording date marked, without any complicated connection or additional battery. And with the DCR-TRV730, you can enjoy Sony's entire line of Digital8 performance features like SteadyShot Picture Stabilization, Super NightShot 0 Lux infrared recording and 3 memory mix modes. The Sony DCR-TRV730 is a full-featured Digital8 camcorder. Digital8 utilizes the digital video format, but records onto Hi8 tapes, and can play your old Hi8 and 8mm movies. The 18x optical (400x digital) zoom is combined with image stabilization, a boon since high zooms can lead to increased shakiness. Additionally, the DCR-TRV730 has a low-light shooting mode that allows for visibility in near darkness. An assortment of special effects and faders help give your footage a more professional feel. Also, a 16:9 widescreen-shooting mode lets you shoot movies in the same aspect ratio as Hollywood films. The black-and-white EVF is adequate, but the large 2. 5-inch color LCD monitor is the better bet for framing your shots. MPEG movies and digital stills can be recorded onto the accompanying 4 MB Memory Stick, which can then be downloaded to your computer via USB. Like all DV camcorders, the audio is recorded at CD quality levels-PCM digital stereo. Should you need more professional sound than the built-in mic provides, a mic input jack is located on the camcorder. Because the DCR-TRV730 uses the DV format, you can download your footage to a computer for editing using an IEEE 1394 cable. Analog pass-through ports are built-in, letting you digitally archive all your old analog footage. Also included are a shoulder strap, lens cap, battery, AC adapter, and remote control.

Review Sony DCRTRV310 Handycam Digital Camcorder / Sony DCR-TRV310:

The Sony TRV310 Handycam provides top-of-the-line digital recording with a host of advanced options, including a large 3. 5-inch LCD screen. Its powerful 360x digital zoom, wide range of special effects, image stabilization, and Sony's unique infrared night recording capabilities make it a great choice for those needing high-end digital camcorder features. Sony's elongated Handycam design fits easily in one hand and is well-balanced. While not the lightest of camcorders, we found the Handycam line to be one of the most ergonomic and easy to use. The Sony TRV310 Handycam has a nifty status screen on the outside of the LCD screen module that lets you know how many minutes you've recorded or how far you've played a tape. It also tells you if there's a tape in the camcorder. This screen is backlit for maximum visibility. The LCD screen swivels 210 degrees, which lets you record above your head or put yourself in the picture. The optical viewfinder is black and white, which is not a real drawback since we ended up using the LCD screen for most of our shooting. [+]
The unit's playback buttons are backlit, making it easier to use the Sony TRV310 Handycam as a VCR. This video camera also comes with a remote control unit. The Sony TRV310 Handycam lets you manually adjust focus and exposure; it also includes seven programmed exposure modes, plus backlight compensation, to help optimize your video under different shooting conditions. It provides three recording modes-normal, hold-down, and five-second-to help you take short, lively video segments. The TRV310 also lets you record still photos. It features a high-powered 360x digital zoom, great for getting closeups and recording faraway events. This Handycam also provides electronic image stabilization to minimize camera shake, which is especially useful when using the zoom or during fast-action events. We enjoyed Sony's full range of special effects, including the distinctive pastel, slim, and stretch picture modes. The TRV310 provides widescreen, black-and-white, sepia, negative, and solarized modes. We also liked the range of fade options, which include fade to black, mosaic, monotone, overlap, and a bounce-image effect. The camera includes digital effects for playback, including still, flash, lumi, slow shutter, old movie, and trail modes. You can even insert a scene in the middle of a recording. The camcorder includes Sony's exclusive NightShot capability, which lets you shoot video in total darkness. The camcorder emits an invisible infrared beam to light the scene. The resulting video is basically black and white and lower quality than normal, but being able to get decent images in complete darkness is nonetheless pretty amazing. The TRV310 also comes with a mount for an external standard light. This camcorder uses the Digital 8 format, which lets you record digital video on a standard Hi8 tape. Digital video gives you extraordinary video quality-up to 500 lines of resolution and CD-quality sound; it's the top-of-the-line format. The digital format allows you to take digital still pictures, just like a digital camera. If you want to download and edit your digital still images and video on a computer, however, you have to purchase a separate video capture card first. You can also use this camcorder to play back analog 8mm and Hi8 tapes-a handy feature if you have previously recorded video in these formats. Pros: Large 3. 5-inch LCD screen Super-powerful zoom Still photo capability High-quality digital format Great selection of special effects Image stabilization Cons: Optical viewfinder is black and white Sony's line of ground breaking Digital Video equipment offers you unsurpassed creative and technological freedom. The bridge between DV cameras and PCs has now raised personal video recording standards to the highest possible levels. And with the Sony product line, you know you're getting the highest quality for all your personal video recording needs.
