Review Pentax ZX-5N 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only) / Pentax 1354:

Though the Pentax ZX-5N autofocus camera body has all of the popular attributes of its predecessor, the ZX-5, several sophisticated features-such as six-segment metering, center-weighted metering, spot metering, as well as a TTL phase-matching autofocus system-have been added. A single turn of the metering mode switch lets you select one of the three metering mode options, giving you full control in any lighting situation. The automatic exposure compensation, which works with the multipattern metering system in the autoexposure mode, lets you try many creative options. Pentax's original electronic control mechanism also lets you preview your image in any exposure mode. Simply push the preview button and you can pinpoint the exact in-focus area (depth-of-field) of your image in relation to the selected aperture. The TTL (through the lens) phase-matching autofocus system gives you high-quality, crisply focused images, no matter the lighting conditions. You get to choose between one of two autofocus frames-three-point or spot AF-whichever suits your individual preference or needs. The autobracketing is easy-to-use and automatically takes three different exposures: normal, under-, and overexposed of the same scene in 1EV or 1/2 EV steps; using a simple dial control, you can quickly shift exposure across a range of +/- 3EV in 1/2EV steps. This feature works when using flash photography, too. When you want to frame the same scene a little differently, you can simply push the memory lock button and your current settings are memorized for 10 seconds. [+]
This lets you recompose your subject without changing all of your settings. If the standard setting just doesn't capture the scene, you can switch to panorama mode at any frame on a roll of film. This is perfect for large group shots or landscapes. In addition, you can also set your own pace with three drive modes: single-frame advance, consecutive-frame advance at two frames per second, and a self-timer with a 12-second delay. With all of these options, it could be easy to forget what your camera's indications and settings are. However, the ZX-5N has a multidata, fixed pentaprism viewfinder and easy-to-read LCD panel so you can keep track of all your information, such as: the exposure frame number, exposure compensation factor, battery exhaustion warning, flash use recommendation, and recharge completion/incompletion. The LCD panel even has an automatic brightness level adjustment, so you can easily check your settings whether it's day or night.

Review Canon Elph Jr. APS Camera Kit / Canon Jr.:

Setting a new standard for compactness and affordability, the Canon ELPH Jr. brings the benefits of Advanced Photo System technology to a wider audience. Extremely thin and lightweight, the ELPH Jr. 's physical presence disguises its huge photographic power. Utilizing a new 4-part, 4-group lens design, the ELPH Jr. is equipped with a fast f/2. 8 fixed-focal-length lens that delivers sharp, high-contrast images with minimal peripheral aberration. Its precise active AF system assures you of sharp, crisp pictures in a wide variety of shooting situations and a focusing range of 1. 5 feet (0,45m) to infinity. The Advanced Photo System technology provides a wide range of benefits. [+]
Film loading is as simple as dropping the Advanced Photo System film cartridge into the chamber. There's no leader film to position on a take-up spool, no wasted film or user error. With the ELPH Jr. , you can freely switch to one of three picture formats at any time, at any point in the roll. Take traditional pictures in a 2:3 format using the C (Classic) setting; make sure everyone gets into the group shot with the H (wide angle) mode; and bring home panoramic shots of scenery with the P (Panoramic, 1:3) format, all in one versatile system. Masks in the ELPH Jr. 's viewfinder clearly identify the selected ratio for you, so you'll see exactly what will appear on film. ELPH Jr. goes even further to assure you of quality pictures by magnetically recording five types of digital data on every shot. When your film is developed, Advanced Photo System processing equipment reads the data, called Print Quality Improvement (PQI) and makes automatic adjustments in the developing process to deliver the highest print quality possible. With Canon ELPH Jr. , outstanding picture quality is no small feat.

Encased in a stylish body, the Pentax IQZoom 80S offers everything for quick, effortless zoom photography. Day or night, indoors or out, it performs with quality and in style. With a focal length range of 38mm to 80mm and a zoom ratio of approximately 2. 1 times, the IQZoom 80S offers excellent picture framing flexibility for a variety of subjects from landscapes to casual snapshots. The large and easy-to-read LCD panel provides useful exposure information at a glance. The IQZoom 80S' autofocus and auto exposure operation make it extremely easy for the user to take clear, high quality images time after time. The IQZoom 80S handles film loading, film speed setting with DX-coded film, film advance and film rewind automatically. Built-in automatic flash offers five modes: flash-on, flash-off (museum mode), slow shutter sync (sunset mode), bulb-sync (fireworks mode) and bulb (evening mode) for great pictures in any lighting condition. The red-eye reduction mode effectively helps to reduce the unwanted red-eye phenomena that may sometimes occur in flash shots. Backlight compensation mode makes good use of natural lighting (without a flash) to improve the balance of light between the subject and the rest of the picture. [+]
The actual-image zoom viewfinder adjusts the viewfinder image according to the selected focal length. It also offers a close-distance compensation frame, in-focus confirmation, close-distance warning, and flash recharge signal. The built-in electronic self-timer delays the shutter release by 10 seconds, allowing the photographer to join family or friends for memorable pictures. This feature also works well for time exposures. When the landscape mode is selected, the cameras focus is fixed at infinity to capture distant subjects in sharp focus. This mode also works well when taking pictures through a window or through bars at the zoo.

Review Leica C-1 35mm Camera (Black) / Leica 1:

The LEICA C1 quickly proves itself as a reliable companion in a world full of visual stimuli that often demand the ability to make an on-the-spot decision: Wouldn't now be just the right opportunity to take a picture to make this special moment last a lifetime? All too often we experience situations at work or in our leisure time when a compact high-performance camera would be wonderfully useful. Not only does the LEICA C1 satisfy all these needs, it does so with exquisitely refined style. Right from the start, its rugged aluminum body fits comfortably and securely in the palm of your hand, and its pleasingly rounded edges assure ergonomic handling. The clean lines of its shape are reminiscent of the legendary LEICA M camera system. This LEICA C1 is offered in an exclusive gift set. This set contains the respective camera with case, film, battery, a high-quality album and a pencil by Faber-Castell. The first thing you notice about the Leica C1 with 38-105mm aspherical zoom lens is its refreshingly sleek styling. It's a compact camera that truly looks like a Leica; its curved edges and black aluminum body are quite reminiscent of the classic Leica M series cameras. Of course, being a compact, it is slightly smaller than an M series camera in both width and length, and much lighter. If you're already a Leica fan, you're almost guaranteed to fall in love with the well-styled, easy-to-use Leica C1. [+]
This fully automatic camera offers a remarkable variety of mode selections beyond flash-on/flash-off. For example, there is a setting for bright light situations (such as a snowy field or the beach) where it is necessary to compensate for the normal exposure calculation the light meter would make. It also offers an ample automatic shutter speed range, from 1/500 to 30 seconds, with timed manual exposures of up to 99 seconds. We shot a test roll with outstanding results in a wide array of lighting situations-from low light indoors using the flash, to late afternoon sun at the lake, to neon hotel signs at night (see sample photos by clicking "More Photos" above). The sophisticated zoom lens worked fast and allowed us to compose our shots quickly. The focal length of the lens can be adjusted to five different settings: 38mm, 60mm, 75mm, 90mm, and 105mm. Most of the exposures on our test roll of slides were right on the money with the C1. The exposure meter averages light from the entire picture frame but gives higher consideration to the light inside the autofocus frame. There is also a feature that allows you to lock the focus and exposure settings on a subject, even if that subject is not in the center of the photo. The flash will automatically go off in low-light situations unless you change to a mode that turns it off. We forgot to change this for a couple of our shots and this was the only time the exposure didn't work out the way we wanted it to, but of course you could chalk that up to user error. The C1 felt so much like an M6 (our usual camera) in our hands that we actually found ourselves wishing it weighed more (to make it easier to hold the camera steady)-but again, this was something that should improve with greater familiarity. One thing that might improve ease of use would be a shutter-release button that stood up slightly above the surface of the camera to make it easier to find the button when looking through the viewfinder. But this is a minor complaint. Overall, we would recommend this camera very highly, with no reservations. About Leica Seventy-five years ago, the first Leica camera was introduced to the public at the 1925 Leipzig Spring Fair. At the time, it was by far the most innovative 35mm camera ever produced (as well as one of the very first). Since then, no camera in the world has been more widely acclaimed for continuously meeting the highest standards of excellence in both optical precision and design quality. Notably, many internationally acclaimed photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Sebastião Salgado have used Leica cameras throughout their careers. We think you'll find that Leica compact cameras maintain the same integrity as the M and R models used by the pros, but at more affordable prices. The lenses in all Leica 35mm cameras are still designed by the Leica optical department in Solms, Germany. Every compact camera is also tested for quality in Germany before being released. When you choose Leica, you are buying into one of the great traditions in the history of photography. -Walt Opie.

Review Pentax ZX-7 35mm SLR Camera (Body Only) / Pentax 1364:

Featuring the innovative "Auto Picture Mode," the Pentax ZX-7 is so smart that it completely frees you from complicated exposure control! It will automatically select one of five Picture Modes: landscape, close-up, action, portrait or standard program based on your subjects' distance, lens focal length and movement, and tells you about its decision via the illuminated mode dial and the viewfinder indication. Packaged in a lightweight silver-and-black body, the ultracompact Pentax ZX-7 Autofocus camera body has an attractive round-edged design and its controls are conveniently positioned, making it easy and comfortable to operate. Also, with the innovative auto-picture mode, complicated exposure control decisions are no longer necessary. This feature automatically selects one of the five picture modes: landscape, close-up, action, portrait, or standard, ensuring that your image will be properly exposed. Once you've selected the auto-picture mode, the ZX-7 automatically chooses the autoexposure mode best suited for the scene you want to shoot. This selection is based on the subject's distance, lens focal length, and whether or not the subject is in motion. Once the mode is chosen, the camera "tells" you its decision via the illuminated mode dial and the viewfinder indicator. You can also manually select from the available picture modes, as well as two conventional autoexposure modes (aperture-priority AE and shutter-priority AE), metered manual, and bulb modes. In addition to the hands-off autoexposure mode selection, the ZX-7 has a high-precision, high-speed phase matching autofocus (SAFOX IV) system designed to deliver crisply focused images. The six-segment, multipattern light metering system calculates the optimum exposure, while the three-point wide focus frame enables pinpoint focusing, regardless of the lighting conditions. [+]
If your subject is in motion, the predictive autofocus function automatically detects the subject's motion and anticipates the subject's position at the time of shutter release, resulting in perfectly focused photos. When you want to frame the same scene a little differently, you can simply push the memory-lock button and your current settings are memorized for 20 seconds. This lets you recompose your subject without changing all of your settings. If the standard setting just doesn't capture the scene, you can switch to panorama mode at any frame on a roll of film. This is perfect for large group shots or breathtaking landscapes. With an exposure compensation of +/- 3EV in + 1/2EV steps, you can intentionally over- or underexpose your images, depending on the results you want to attain. You can also expose more than two images on a single frame to create multiple exposures. If you want to take three or more exposures on the same frame, simply press the multiple-exposure button after each exposure. For large group shots or to capture a beautiful landscape, simply switch to panorama mode-at any frame on the roll of film. The viewfinder image automatically adjusts to indicate the panorama format so you know what your picture will look like. With all of these options, it could be easy to forget what your camera's indications and settings are. However, the ZX-7 has a multidata LCD panel, with large icons and numbers, as well as an LCD panel with a green illuminator that brightens the panel to make data confirmation easier. The illumination dial clearly indicates which program is selected by the camera, or by you-even in the dark, as the selected mode is also indicated in your viewfinder display.
